UTILIZING IDLE TIME

wedigdixon.com

Idle time to me is any free time available. It does not include the time you have to rest or learn or work or have fun or perform chores. All the aforementioned are necessary to do in proportion. But what does one do when there is really nothing to do?

1. LEARN A SKILL
Extra income or savings is the current trend. Most at times, it is in relation to a skill or two that one possesses. Make-up artists, hair stylists, cooks/chefs, are few of the occupations one can do along aside a regular job or skills that will enable you to reduce cost in the sense that when you need such services, you will do them yourself instead of paying someone to. These can be learnt for free or at a minimal cost.

2. LEARN A LANGUAGE
In the global setting we find ourselves in currently, a person who speaks more than one language is an asset. There are many free online language courses, some are absolutely free, some require you to pay for only a certificate, some are at a highly reduced cost. The most common languages taught online include German, Italian, French and Spanish. There are also mobile apps that are free and available offline to learn the basic aspects of a language. These apps are really good as they come with recordings to help with the teaching and learning of the accent or pronunciation related to the language.

3. LEARN A SUBJECT OR COURSE
Similar to the above, there are some online courses available for which some are absolutely free, some are at a highly reduced cost or require you to only pay for a certificate when you request for it. Management courses are the most common available. Online/ distance masters or degrees are also available with a few scholarship opportunities. These are very convenient for those with tight schedules and cheaper in comparison to normal courses (for foreign education).

4. ATTEND EVENTS
Events such as seminars, conferences and talks are very beneficial. Some are free either requiring you to pay for a certificate or not, but some also come at a cost. Many influential people speak at these events which means one can learn a lot to improve him/herself or business/occupation. This also means that there is an opportunity to network and make connections that can be beneficial on the business or personal level. These events can be about public speaking, financial management, starting a business and so on.

5. REFLECT
Some people may already be doing these during their busy time or may not be totally interested in the above. Another option is reflecting on one’s life. This can bring to bear solutions to problems or ideas that may be life changing. This might also be the perfect time to think deeply about an available opportunity you have brushed off or not realized.

NB: Improvement should not only be to be good enough for a job/business but for one’s self as well. To be more pleased with yourself. It further helps in the fulfilment of self-actualization.

Here are the links to some free online courses that award certificates from top universities. Develop yourself by engaging in these 4-5weeks courses

  1. Personally I'm very limited in the language department so this serves as a reminder that I'm slacking

    1. That makes two of us. I'm currently learning German but my busy schedule is making the progress slow.
